Why Financial Education Matters

Financial literacy isn’t an abstract skill reserved for economists or investors — it shapes whether a family can absorb a car repair without going into debt, whether a young person understands the loan they’re signing, and whether a household can plan confidently for retirement instead of guessing. The data make clear how much is at stake.

According to the Federal Reserve’s 2024 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking, only 63% of U.S. adults said they could cover a $400 emergency expense using cash or its equivalent — meaning more than a third of Americans are one unexpected bill away from financial strain. Preparedness starts even earlier than adulthood: OECD’s PISA 2022 financial literacy assessment found that 17% of U.S. 15-year-olds do not reach baseline financial literacy proficiency, and that advantaged students outscored disadvantaged students by 92 points — one of the widest such gaps among participating countries. That gap doesn’t close on its own; it reflects unequal access to financial education, not unequal ability to learn it.

The knowledge gaps persist well into adulthood. FINRA’s 2024 National Financial Capability Study found that only 27% of U.S. adults could correctly answer at least five of seven basic financial knowledge questions, and the share of adults with enough savings to cover three months of expenses fell to 46%, down from 53% in 2021. These aren’t signs of poor choices — they’re signs that most people were never given clear, practical instruction in budgeting, credit, saving, or planning for the future.

This is exactly where financial literacy education can make a measurable difference. Practical, accessible instruction in money management, credit and debt, saving, and financial decision-making gives people tools they can use immediately — not to eliminate every economic pressure they face, but to navigate it with more confidence and fewer costly missteps. That’s why we provide free financial literacy education to underserved communities: because understanding money shouldn’t depend on what you can afford to learn. When people have access to clear, honest financial education, they’re better equipped to build the financial security they deserve.
